Fire has destroyed New Brunswick’s tallest wooden church. Saint Simon church near Caraquet was built in 1917. Saint Simon church fire (August 2026) IMAGE: Yvonne Chiasson with permission Residents watched early on Monday morning as an inferno engulfed the structure, leaving behind just charred remains. In a social media post, the Village of Caraquet said its hearts are heavy. It says a true emblem of its heritage has been ravaged by flames. There’s no word on the cause yet, but reports indicate it is considered suspicious. It's insidious! I have a friend who works at a community college and she tells me that new student applicants are submitting long autobiographies - sometimes over 10 pages long. Yet, these same potential students are failing basic English skills entrance tests and need remedial classes! Of course, they aren't writing things themselves!
