Bishop Schneider: "They want another Church...to serve elites of this world."
So why do you legitimize them if you know that?
In a February interview with Robert Moynihan, Bishop Athanasius Schneider addressed the SSPX and pushed back on Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández’s claim that Vatican II’s texts “cannot be modified.” Vatican II, as stated by Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI, was a pastoral council, not dogmatic. He cited the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) as an example of a council containing disciplinary statements the Church would not uphold today. On the SSPX, Schneider proposed bringing them into minimum canonical integration first, then continuing doctrinal dialogue. He warned that harshness risks creating long-term alienation and contrasted the Vatican’s strictness toward the SSPX with what he sees as a more accommodating approach toward China.

Schneider argued that only the Word of God—Scripture—cannot be changed. He said Vatican II was explicitly described by Pope John XXIII as pastoral and catechetical, not dogmatic or definitive. He added that Pope Paul VI also stated that the council did not intend to proclaim new dogma or definitive doctrine.
According to Schneider, while dogmas cited from previous councils cannot be changed, pastoral formulations can be clarified, improved, or corrected. He pointed to the Fourth Lateran Council as an example, noting that one of its pastoral decrees required Jews in Christian cities to wear identifying signs—something he described as discriminatory and later rejected by the Church.

Immediately following this confession, the Catholic Bishop Sipuka declared forgiveness, stating: “By the grace of God and the love of Christ, you are forgiven.”

Rechristianisierung der Gesellschaft bedeutet nicht Politisierung des Christentums
Fatalerweise unterwerfen sich auch Christen diesem Narrativ. Und das nicht aus unehrenhaften Motiven. Der Schutz des christlichen Glaubens vor Instrumentalisierung durch Politik ist ein wichtiges Anliegen. Christen wissen, dass ihr Glaube missbraucht werden kann, und dass Fragmente herausgelöst werden können, um politische Ideologien zu legitimieren.
Dagegen aber hilft nicht, christenfeindliche Dummheiten, wie sie der Spiegel aufs Titelbild bringt, zu tolerieren oder die Sprengkraft des christlichen Glaubens durch ängstliche Vorsicht lahmzulegen. Christen sollten sich trauen, einzufordern, das christliche Bekenntnis wieder als Grundlage der westlichen Gesellschaft zu implementieren. Und zwar in seiner Gesamtheit, weder als politische Ideologie noch als opportune diffuse „christliche Werte“.
