September 14 (the day after the attack) is traditionally celebrated in the Greek Orthodox Church as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. There was no church service taking place in the cathedral at the time, which likely saved many lives. However, the church was damaged in the attack, and many windows were shattered by the explosion. The home of Cardinal Ernest Simoni, 97, in Florence was burgled while he was in Britain. The Albanian cardinal was received by King Charles III at Balmoral Castle on September 15.
