In an open letter, they say they have received no updates on the proceedings and have not been able to give testimony. This sends a devastating message, they argue: that reporting abuse to Church authorities is “useless” because “nothing happens anyway and no one will be held accountable.” They urge Leo XIV to ensure a fair trial so that its judgment and outcome, whatever they may be, remain “free of any shadow of doubt.”

Bishop Luis Ángel de las Heras has appointed two women as episcopal delegates to increase female participation in diocesan governance. The diocesan seminary will close, and its seven seminarians will move to Salamanca as plans advance for an interdiocesan seminary. New pastoral areas will focus on sport, women’s participation, bereavement and work. The Claretian Missionaries will close their residence in León after 57 years. A diocesan synodal assembly is planned for April 2027.

Cardinal Müller called for a return to true masculinity based on courage, sacrifice and responsibility. Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller joined the Pilgrimage of Men with Families to the Shrine of the First Martyrs of Poland in Międzyrzecz on September 12, blessing plaques marking the 1,060th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. Speaking about male fidelity, Müller said: “The world today is trying to redefine masculinity.” He pointed to the Międzyrzecz martyrs as men willing to defend what is sacred to the end, defining a “true man” as one “who builds on a firm foundation and is capable of suffering for higher values.” The martyrs, robbed and murdered at night († 1003) in their monastery, were ordinary flesh-and-blood men, not legendary heroes, Müller said. He added that masculine victory often arises through steadfast responsibility for those entrusted to one’s care.

Around 200 masked counter-demonstrators, some on bicycles, tried repeatedly to block the route, overturning containers and setting off firecrackers. Police issued orders to disperse before deploying water cannons and rubber shots (!). Bottles were thrown at officers and two people were provisionally arrested. The march has been kept outside central Zurich for years, a restriction organisers say amounts to unequal treatment.

Leo XIV claims that Christ founded a “religious movement” - in direct contradiction to Church teaching and the Gospel. The recently published document The Path of Hope was signed by the heads of three Vatican dicasteries and approved by Leo XIV on 22 June. It states in §10: “Early Christianity developed from the movement initiated by Jesus and his disciples, distinguishing itself from the various forms of Judaism over time.” That’s the liberal Protestant view associated with figures such as Albert Schweitzer. It clashes with propositions explicitly condemned by St Pius X in Lamentabili sane. Condemned sentences are: §59: Christ “inaugurated a religious movement adapted to, or to be adapted to, different times and places.” §60: “Christian doctrine was originally Judaic. Leo XIV awards Ratzinger Prize to theologian who attacked Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum. John C. Cavadini will be awarded with the 2026 Ratzinger Prize, announced today by the Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation. Pope Leo XIV will present the prize on December 19 at the Apostolic Palace. Cavadini, a professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, has written extensively on Ratzinger. Benedict XVI. appointed him to the International Theological Commission in 2009. Cavadini is an explicit critic of Benedict's Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum that liberalized the traditional Roman rite. In 2022, the three "conservatives" Cavadini, Mary Healy and Fr Thomas Weinandy published a series in Notre Dame’s Church Life Journal on the post-Vatican II liturgical reform. “In normalizing the Tridentine Mass, Benedict undermined the principle by which, as he himself insists, Vatican II must be interpreted: a hermeneutic of continuity,” they wrote. Frings declared in the Conciliar aula: “The Holy Office’s manner of conducting itself in many spheres is not in step with our times, is detrimental to the Church, and is a cause of scandal for many.” He was, of course, speaking from a script known to have been previously dictated by Ratzinger.2 Peter Seewald commented that “no one had ever dared before to criticize Ottaviani’s machinery so fiercely.” 3 It is a well recorded fact in the annals of the Council that Card. Ottaviani was several times publicly humiliated by progressivist reformers, especially from Germany, in a manner that defied both Christian charity and the gentlemanly code of ethics. The Frings/Ratzinger broadside, which constituted one of the Council’s most emotionally-charged and dramatic events, was no exception.

Vatican concludes “reflection process” with bi-ritual congregation SJM. The Vatican has formally concluded a multi-year reflection process involving the Servants of Jesus and Mary (SJM), a Catholic religious congregation in Austria, founded in 1988. The community celebrates both the Novus Ordo and the traditional Roman rite. It remains closely associated with the Catholic Scouts of Europe (KPE). The Vatican’s process began in late 2022, when it appointed former abbot Raimund Schreier as Apostolic Assistant. His task was to “accompany” the SJM for a period originally planned to last three years. The community examined its history, internal structures, self-understanding and its founder, former Jesuit Andreas Hönisch.
