Bishops Attack FSSPX - "Invalid Sacraments", "Abuse of Eucharist"
Arlington Bishop: FSSPX Sacraments Are "Invalid"
Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington, Virginia, instructed Catholics to “avoid participating in the activities of the FSSPX.”
In a letter dated 8 July, he wrote that "any celebrations of the sacraments of confession and matrimony by the FSSPX are invalid, and the administration of other sacraments is illicit".
In September 2025, Bishop Burbidge said that his meeting with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew was “incredible,” and marked a “historic moment of Christian unity”.
Covington Bishop: FSSPX Mass Is "Abuse of Eucharist"
Bishop John Iffert of Covington, Kentucky, said in a recent statement that the sacraments from the FSSPX are “illicit”:
“The Masses these priests celebrate are an abuse of the Eucharist, insofar as they make the sacrament of unity into an occasion of division within the Church, and so they should be firmly rejected and avoided by all the Catholic faithful,” he claims.
In September 2024, he celebrated a homosexual Eucharist. In his defence, he wrote: “The presumption that our gay or lesbian brothers and sisters are guilty of unconfessed sin that would preclude them from receiving the Eucharist is discriminatory and never just.”
In Covington are two schools affiliated with FSSPX. Iffert has instructed Catholics to withdraw their children from these schools due to the "schismatic nature" of the group.
"Separate from the FSSPX!"
Bishop Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez of Palm Beach, Florida, has issued a decree instructing the faithful to withdraw from any ecclesiastical ministry associated with the FSSPX.
Catholics should leave the FSSPX and enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.
Monsignor Rodriguez was appointed bishop by Pope Leo XIV in December 2025. He is a supporter of homosexual activist James Martin SJ and has welcomed homosexual Eucharists, as well as Fiducia Supplicans, the latter as 'a sign of motherly love'.
