One of Leo XIV's First Bishop Appointees, 54, Was Shot Dead
Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane, Mozambique, was shot and killed in the early hours of June 6 at the age of 54.
According to reports, he was found dead in a corridor of the episcopal residence.
Initial information indicates that he suffered the gunshot wound to the chest.
Archbishop Inácio Saúre of Nampula, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, confirmed the bishop's death, saying that the circumstances surrounding it have yet to be clarified.
Leo XIV appointed Bishop Afonso as Bishop of Quelimane in July 2025. In April 2026, Leo XIV appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.
