K.S., 33, a man from Ontario, Canada, wants a "vagina" while keeping his normal reproductive organs, and a court has ruled that the state must pay for it, writes NationalPost.com (12 April).
The operation is not available in Canada and must be performed at a butchery ("clinic") in Austin, Texas, at a cost of between $10,000 and $70,000. He was also given $20,000 for legal fees. The decision by a three-judge panel of the Ontario Divisional Court was unanimous.
K.S. had been locked in a legal battle with the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) since 2022, when OHIP denied his request for coverage for an operation that was not available in Canada.
He argued that forcing him to have his normal reproductive organs amputated would invalidate his "identity" and amount to an illegal act of conversion therapy. He was also rightly concerned about the risk of complications and urinary incontinence from the amputation.
